Why pool decks fail
The damage happens
inside the pore.
Salt dissolves in splash-out and spray, soaks into the pores of the concrete, and then the desert does the rest: the water evaporates, the salt crystallises, and crystals growing inside a confined pore push hard enough to lift the surface right off the slab. That is the flaking and pitting you see in a ring around older pools — it is not wear, it is crystal pressure from the inside.
Water-softener discharge does the same thing to whatever slab it drains onto, which is why we look at more than the pool surround when we come out.
The fix is to keep the saltwater out of the pore network in the first place. A penetrating sealer blocks the water and the chlorides riding in it, without laying anything on the surface.

It is a penetrating sealer, not a coating — so it does not make a wet deck slicker than it already was. High-shine finishes are a different conversation, because those do leave a layer; if you want a wet look somewhere that gets walked on barefoot and wet, say so at the assessment and we will talk it through rather than just quoting it.
Travertine & stone surrounds
Not all decks
are concrete.
Travertine is everywhere around southern Utah pools, and it stains in ways that do not come back out. Stone that will not absorb a penetrating sealer gets treated with a bonded acrylic made for non-porous surfaces — TravaCast — which guards against staining and discolouration on travertine, Spanish tile and stone coping. Which product your deck needs is exactly what the assessment decides.

Will the deck be slippery afterwards?
Not with Salt Shield 303. It soaks into the concrete and dries clear with no film on top, and the manufacturer states plainly that it does not change the skid or slip resistance of the surface.
My deck is already flaking. Is it too late?
Usually not — but the surface has to be corrected before any sealer goes down, because sealing over damage locks the damage in. That is a crack repair and restoration conversation first, and it is exactly what the free assessment is for.
How long before the deck is back in use?
Twenty-four hours. Plan for one day around the pool rather than on it.
Does softener discharge really matter?
Yes — it is the same salt mechanism in a different spot. The slab your softener drains onto is quietly running the same experiment as your pool deck, so we check it while we are there.
